A woman’s vent about her boyfriend leaving for her dream destination without her on her birthday has drawn strong reactions online after she shared the story alongside a simple bowl of canned street corn.
The post, shared by user WeeebleSqueaks in the GirlDinner community on Reddit, paired a photo of warm canned corn mixed with light mayo, lime juice and chili powder with a lengthy explanation of her frustration.
“My boyfriend goes on a vacation every year with his adoptive family,” she wrote, noting past trips to Japan, Spain and Portugal.
Despite being together for five years, the original poster (OP) said she has never been invited: “It’s understandable, I’m not exactly family as we’re not married… but an invite to buy my own ticket would be nice.”
'It's not a big deal'
The situation escalated when her boyfriend revealed that this year’s trip would be to Greece, a destination she had repeatedly described as her dream first international trip. The timing added another layer of disappointment.
“He says it’s not a big deal, we can just celebrate the day after,” she wrote, explaining the vacation would take place on her birthday.
Because she works in therapy and cannot easily take time off during the busy week around Labor Day, the OP said rescheduling the celebration does not feel the same.
The conflict worsened when she asked if he could return early. According to the post, his brother criticized her request and referenced their mother’s health issues as a reason the timing should not change.
The OP told Redditors she had spent months helping care for the woman after a heart attack, which added to her frustration.
“The corn was good,” she concluded dryly in the post.
“Hopefully it helps with my stress constipation.”
...Responses from Reddit critics were blunt about the situation.
“Girl, stop over functioning for this man and his family. Period," a supporter advised the OP.
"No more looking after mum if they can’t even include you in a trip after five years. It’s a two-way street."
'So disrespectful'
Another person assured that, “Five years is family. Five years and taking care of his mother is family.
"Do you want this for the rest of your life where he takes the kids and leaves you on these vacations because you aren't family, but the kids are? This is so hurtful and so disrespectful and blatantly callous.”
Relationship commentary often points to behavior patterns that make people feel overlooked by their partners. One article from Aligned With Love notes that recognizing uncomfortable feelings can be important when assessing a relationship.
“Trusting your feelings is key; doubts often stem from fear of confrontation or self-deception. Listen to your body, heed the facts; don't cover cracks, confront truths,” the site states.
The same article describes scenarios where partners make plans without including the other person, saying: “They may organize their plans without any consultation to you and they may not care whether you go out with your same-sex friends.”
Questions about when dissatisfaction signals a deeper issue can also arise in long-term partnerships. Therapist Tonya Lester explained in an article that many people stay in relationships even when something feels wrong.
“You know you're unhappy, but you try to stick it out because you're comfortable,” Lester wrote, “Or you realize you aren't being treated well, but can't face the prospect of being alone, or trying to start over again with someone new.”
For the OP, the bowl of canned street corn became a small moment of comfort while she processed the situation and vented online.
Her post closed with a mix of humor and exhaustion, using the meal as a backdrop to share a personal moment that many readers clearly had strong opinions about.
